Hemorrhoids Bleeding

Many people over a certain age experience hemorrhoids bleeding, so it is not unusual. Nevertheless, If you are experiencing hemorrhoids bleeding, you should inform your doctor to ensure that there are no serious underlying problems, such as rectal cancer, causing the bleeding.

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are exceptionally annoying. They are basically enlarged veins near the rectum. When they become aggravated, such as by the passing of hard stools, knots often occur along side them.

There are two kinds of hemorrhoids, internal, which cannot be seen from the outside and external which show up at the base of the rectum.  Sometimes the hemorrhoidal bleeding is the first sign that you actually have hemorrhoids. Other times the pain will start first and the bleeding will happen afterwards.

Hemorrhoid Causes

There are many potential causes of hemorrhoids. To a certain extent, heredity plays a role. If your parents had it then its likely that, at some point, you will have it as well. Constipation, especially when chronic, is a key cause for the condition. The straining placed on the bowels will aggravate the anal area to such a degree that hemorrhoids will develop. Many women will develop hemorrhoids as a direct result of a pregnancy. And diarrhea can also initiate the condition as the constant excavations begin to irritate the anus walls.

You won't always notice the blood in your stools, especially if the blood is not fresh. You may, however, first notice it on toilet paper or on your underwear.

Hemorrhoids Bleeding Treatment

You should resist the urge to self diagnose hemorrhoids bleeding as it may reflect an underlying illness. If, however, a doctor has made the diagnoses, you can opt for certain treatments. First, clean the area. And keep it clean. Don't do any harsh rubbing, as this will only irritate it and possibly make it bleed more.

An immediate change in diet will usually help also. Increase the amount of roughage or fiber in your diet and drink lots of water. The combination of these two things will make your stool softer and allow easier passage through the rectum. Also, try to avoid straining when you have your bowel movement. Straining will only put additional pressure on the hemorrhoids causing a further delay in the healing process. It also helps to soak the hemorrhoids in warm water 3 or 5 times a day to help reduce the swelling and bleeding and help it to heal better.

In serious cases of hemorrhoids bleeding,  your doctor may employ lasers to cauterize the hemorrhoids and stop the bleeding. Not all doctors make this treatment available, however. Also, since this type of treatment is relatively new and may or may not be covered by your current insurance policy, it's best to check with them before making any decisions.

Most times, if you take care of them, your hemorrhoids will clear up. if, however, the bleeding lasts more than a few days, and shows no sign of diminishing, your doctor will probably have to take more drastic measures such as surgery.
