Hemorrhoid Removal

If you have ever gone through the painful experience of hemorrhoids, permanent hemorrhoid removal has probably crossed your mind. It is true that some of the common local cures may get rid of the problem for now, only to return in three of four weeks Hemorrhoids are rarely dangerous, but there is no end to their annoyance.

Once you start to get them, you will most likely continue to get hemorrhoids unless you drastically change your diet, have them removed by hemorrhoid banding or hemorrhoid surgery, or a combination of diet change and hemorrhoid treatment.

Hemorrhoid Removal Using Rubber Band Ligation

Probably the most popular form of hemorrhoid removal is a process called rubber band ligation or hemorrhoid banding. This is a simple procedure in which an actual rubber band is utilized. There are two types of hemorrhoids - external and internal and the process is slightly different for each type.

For external hemorrhoids, the doctor can place the band directly over the hemorrhoids. However, for internal hemorrhoids, the process is a bit more difficult. Your doctor will most likely use an anoscope to view the inside of your anus. Using this, he will be able to determine how many hemorrhoids there are and their exact location.

He will then use a specialized banding tool to place the rubber band directly around the hemorrhoid area. In a week or two, depending on the size of the hemorrhoid, the blood flow will have been halted from the hemorrhoid and it will atrophy and fall off.

Hemorrhoid Removal Using Surgery

A slightly more invasive hemorrhoid removal procedure is surgery. Like rubber band ligation, this is nearly always done on a outpatient basis. The doctor will typically use either a scalpel or a laser. Once the hemorrhoid is removed the surgical area will either be stitched shut or left open and covered with medicated gauze.

As with any surgery, you will almost certainly experience some pain following the surgery. The doctor will most likely offer to write you a prescription for the pain. In addition, you may want to pick up one or more hemorrhoid creams to help dull the pain once you get home.

The at home Recovery time is usually a bit longer than with rubber ban ligation - typically taking anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks at which time you will check in with the doctor who will check you to make sure the problem is all gone. Depending on the type of work that you do, you will probably be able to return back to work after within a week or two.

Hemorrhoid Removal Using Staples

Stapled hemorrhoidopexy is a relatively new form of hemorrhoid removal that is somewhere between rubberband ligation and scalpel surgery. In this procedure, the hemorrhoids are treated by simply removing the blood flow to them. This is done by stapling them to their normal positions in the bowel. This operation is usually more painful than hemorrhoid banding and less painful than scalpel surgery. So far, however, it seems that the hemorrhoids in patients that have this procedure are more likely to return than in ones who had scalpel surgery.

It is important to note that hemorrhoid removal may not permanently resolve the problem. In a small percentage of cases hemorrhoids return following surgery. But, you can help to prevent them re-occurring by eating a high fiber diet consisting of many fruits and vegetables.
